Storytime

Denver Broncos Quarterback Tim Tebow is seen reading Dr. Sesuss' Green Eggs and Ham, one of Ms. Platt's favorite authors; because he writes in rhyme.

When Tim was a little boy he had a lot of trouble reading.  This book was his favorite.  Watch as he reads  the story and it comes to life, and decide if you like the story too!  Do you hear any rhyming words?

Museum of the Moving Image

This Friday we are visiting The Museum of the Moving Image... with a special exhibition of Jim Henson's Fantastic World of puppets: including the popular Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, and Bert and Ernie.

Word Wall

Our word wall is a very important component to writer's workshop and reader's workshop.  Once a word is on our word wall it is expected that students' know these words in a snap -- meaning, as soon as they see the word they know how to pronounce it.  We call this, see it, say it, in a snap.  Also, when writing, students are responsible for writing these words correctly.  We can look at our class word wall and our own personal word wall that is kept in our writing folders.

Author's as Mentors

This month during writer's workshop we will be studying Ezra Jack Keats' craft as an author and seeing if we can incorporate his craft in our writing.  Our goals for this unit include writing 4-5 booklets, each having 5 pages (about a paragraph on each page).  Stay tuned to hear all the exciting things we are learning about this author and for exemplary first grade work to be published on our blog.  We can't wait to share all the wonderful authors we have in 108!

Reading Across Genres to Learn About a Topic: Information Books, Stories, and Poems

Readers learn from many sources: nonfiction and fiction books, stories, poems, environmental print, signs, directions, cereal boxes...

During reader's workshop this unit, we will be working with partners to read about topics: animals, insects, foods, people, places, and transportation. Students will be expected to read a variety of text structures and notice the difference between stories, poems, and information books.  We will then connect this information across 2 or more texts.  Our main focus will be on learning new vocabulary and working together to figure out the meaning of our texts.

Dental Health Month

Our Scholastic News taught us all about good dental hygiene for... animals!  We also talked about how it is important for us to take care of our teeth.
